What is the installation cost versus normal gypsum wall board?

QuietRock ES, our best selling panel, is a true "score and snap" acoustic damped drywall panel and as such cuts and installs just like standard gypsum wall board. (use standard drywall fasteners and standard finishing products). Costs to install should be very similar to installing standard drywall. However, we strongly recommended the use of acoustical sealants when building any STC rated assembly. The use of sealants and accessory products can contribute to total cost but the cost is minimal and associated with the application of the accessory product.

Would standard pictures and shelving attached to the quietrock degrade its performance?

Unlike "decoupled" approaches such as resilient channel (RC) or sound clip systems (RSIC clips), QuietRock performance is not affected by attaching shelves, TV's or other fastened items to the wall. This is because QuietRock technology uses a different approach to attenuating sound referred to as "constrained layer damping". Can QuietRock be used over cement block walls to reduce the sound within a large room?

If you are concerned with the noise levels within the a large cement room, this could mean room itself has too many hard smooth surfaces which are causing the sound to bounce around and reflect off these hard surfaces (also known as “sound reverberation” or “echo”).

What is Noise Reduction Coefficient?

The NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), is a single-number index determined in a lab test and used for rating how absorptive a particular material is. This industry standard ranges from zero (perfectly reflective) to 1* (perfectly absorptive). It is simply the average of the mid-frequency sound absorption coefficients (250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hertz) rounded to the nearest 5%.

Can I glue QuietRock to a textured wallpaper on existing plaster and lath wall?

No, this is not recommended. QuietRock provides its acoustical performance by being allowed to flex when sound energy hits the panel. The overall thickness and rigidity of lath and plaster construction walls make this a poor surface to apply QuietRock to. Direct application of QuietRock over this type of surface does not allow the QuietRock to flex as it should and therefore the acoustical performance of the QuietRock can be significantly reduced or even negated.

Does QuietRock work if applied directly to a brick or plaster walls?

QuietRock can be applied to light-weight plaster that is no thicker than 1/4". Our product needs to vibrate in order for the polymer in the core to convert acoustic energy into thermal energy. If it is installed over a ridged surface such as heavy plaster or brick, the panel will not vibrate and the acoustic performance will be affected.

Does QuietRock deaden sound inside a room, not just keep sound from coming in?

QuietRock is “STC rated and tested” to reduce the transmission of airborne noise through a wall or floor/ceiling assembly. Reducing sound echo inside a space is a different classification of products which are rated based on “NRC” (Noise Reduction Coefficient). QuietRock has not been tested for a noise reduction coefficient rating.

Is it better to put QuietRock on both sides of the party wall or just one side?

Depending on the wall type and level of sound reduction (STC rating), you wish to achieve, QuietRock can be installed on one or both sides of a wall. In most cases and applications, installing QuietRock on only one side of a wall is all that is necessary to see noticeable and significant reductions in sound transmission through the wall (assuming the wall is well sealed with acoustical sealant-QuietSeal Pro and QuietPutty is used on the electrical outlet boxes and that the sound cannot “flank” or go around the wall).

I have in wall speakers on my wall. What should I do to treat the noise?

While in-wall speakers are a popular option for home theater and sound systems nowadays, unfortunately, they create significant problems with sound transmission as they project sound into the wall and make it easy for the sound to go through to the other side of the wall. One suggestion would be to create box enclosures with QuietRock that enclose the back of the speaker inside the wall.

Is there a single product that has an STC of 45 vs. a combination of products in an assembly that provide an STC of 45?

In the acoustical products industry the conventional approach is to conduct laboratory or field STC tests on complete construction assemblies (wall or floor/ceiling assemblies), to determine STC values. These tests are almost never done on individual materials and it is not known if there are any products available in the market which have been tested on an individual basis and which would provide this high of an STC rating. We have not STC tested QuietRock products on an individual basis, only as part of wall assemblies.
